Discover the Charming Village of Mijas

Nestled snuggly into the imposing Sierra de Mijas some 20 minutes west of Malaga and five kilometers north of the coastal resort of Fuengirola, lies Mijas pueblo. It is one of the best known of the famous “white towns” of Andalucía and is certainly the most beautiful and best preserved.

Dating back to Roman times, the town has seen itself develop and change in response to the shifting tides of rulers and economy. The Romans who founded it, called it “Tamisa”. Later the Moors changed its name to “Mixa” and benevolently treated the village inhabitants allowing them to preserve their property, religion, and customs in exchange for a share of their goods from their activities. The modern name of Mijas was given to the village after the Christian reconquest of Spain in the 15th century.

Arriving in the village, you enter another world. White buildings against an azure-blue sky. Tethered donkeys and horse drawn carriages line up on the Plaza de la Virgen de la Pena add to the feeling of being transported back to another more tranquil time. There’s plenty to explore when you visit Mijas including ancient ruins, museums and art galleries. Mijas is also a food lover’s paradise, renowned for fresh seafood, tapas, and delicious local wines. You can indulge yourself in traditional cuisine at one of the many restaurants, cafes or beachside bars.
